This fascinating tour celebrates life and tradition of San Pedro Market with its rich living Culture, a place you will see native fruits, vegetables, different types of potatoes, the cusquenian bread known as “Pan Chuta”, cheese, quinoa, Corn of the sacred valley, and locals enjoying traditional dishes, desserts and juices. You will see as well the Cemetery of La Almudena, built in 1850 and considered one of the most emblematic and representative in Perú.
A place where are resting 23.000 souls including presidents, intellectuals, scientists, writers, doctors and illustrious local personalities like the famed photographer Martin Chambi or Mrs. Paulina, who used to prepare the most delicious Corn beer called “Chicha” in the twentieth century, she still enjoys Glasses full of Chicha and other gifts that the family and friends leave her on her Altar. The children have their own section with specially-sized voults.
We will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 am to drive to the Cemetery of Almudena where we will enjoy the fascinating stories of the oldest Cemetery of Cusco city, built in 1850.
Today more than 23,000 souls are buried here, most in stacked crypts with shadowbox window displays created by the deceased’s families, who pay annual rental fees to keep the bodies entombed.
Each shadowbox is uniquely decorated, with toys, flowers, photos, mementos, and even figurines displayed behind glass, displaying the uniqueness of each family buried there.
Local schoolboys are paid by families to clean the metal surfaces of the tombs with lemon rind and sweep the surfaces, providing water to flowers and generally cleaning up the place.
Then, we will walk for about 20 minutes through tradicional streets to San Pedro Market, a place where you can experience the day to day authentic customs of the Cusquenians, there are plenty of thing to see since the very bizarre stuff to the colorful fruits an vegetables. “The San Pedro Market” is a picturesque place visited by national and foreign visitors, a perfect place you can find local products like Coffee, Chocolates, fruits, coca leaves, potatoes, quinoa, vegetables, local bread known as Pan Chuta, cheese, local food, freshly squeezed juices prepared with exotic fruit, etc.
After San pedro Market we will walk back to the hotel or to the main square to enjoy lunch.
